Glass pool fencing and balustrades are one element of creating a perfect place to live and having beautiful plants to complement them is another.

Healthy plants on a balcony or around a pool area can really bring those features to life.

The trouble is that Perth weather can be extremely hot in summer so choosing plants that can take the heat is very important. The last thing you want to worry about is cry baby shrubs that can’t take a bit of sun.

Also, keeping water use to a minimum is vital nowadays.

Okay, what do I do next?

Luckily for those who don’t have the greenest of thumbs, the Water Corporation has exceeded all expectations and provided a great resource to help you choose your plants.

They provide a very cool web form where you can easily search for waterwise plants, shrubs, ground covers, creepers etc in the following categories:

  • Growth (so you don’t accidentally buy a plant for your apartment balcony that grows to 8 metres or a creeper that completely covers the neighbours house)
  • Flowering season (you can ensure there’s some colour all year round)
  • Garden types (different folks like different looks)
  • Origin (all plants, Australian native, WA native and exotic)

Some of our favourites are kangaroo paw, frangipani, protea, hibiscus, cactus, grass trees. There are loads more.

Anyway, have a look:

And remember, don’t plant any trees next to your pool fence that can be climbed by kids. They’ll be getting over the fence in no time. Read more about pool safety.
